My first client

As trainers we do our best to prepare our students for working as effective and confident hypnotherapists, but can anything really prepare you for that first client after graduation?

We interviewed four hypnotherapists, two of whom have just set up in practice, two of whom have been working as hypnotherapists for a while, about their experiences.

Why it’s worth writing a book

With changing technologies, publishing a book has become easier and easier. However for many people, becoming an author still seems a daunting prospect.

But if you run a successful practice then, with a bit of expert help, you can probably do it.

Copyright and your audios

Lots of hypnotherapists make their own audios, either as downloadable MP3s or as CDs. Some just make them available to clients, others view them as a valuable income stream, and a chance to offer support to those who cannot attend one to one sessions, because of availability, geography or personal preference. Problems can arise, however with planning the content of your CDs because the copyright laws around the use of hypnotherapy scripts have a few complications.

Free Hypnotherapy Scripts

Having said my piece about the use of hypnotic scripts (here), I thought I would point you to some of the best free ones that I know about.

My choices are not in any particular order, so just wander down the list and enjoy. And don't forget that if you use these as a basis for your sessions, you should always adapt and personalise them to your clients.

Stress management for self employed therapists

Many therapists take up their profession to help people and make their lives better, but we also decide to go self-employed for the freedoms we think it will bring. No more nine to five, being our own boss, the flexibility of working from home, setting our own hours to be there for the kids, better work/life balance, avoiding the daily traffic jams and so on.

So now you are self employed, how's that going for you?

Working with Children and their Parents

When I give introductory workshops to therapists on using hypnosis with children one of the aspects that people often find a little daunting is how to deal with the parents of the children. It is also an area that often provokes a lot of differing opinions and lively debate so I thought it might be a useful topic to write about.

Nine essential things to put in your terms and conditions

What do you mean, you don’t have any? Let’s start then, briefly, with why I think you should.

A lot is (rightly) said about building rapport with clients, about getting into their world and understanding their point of view, and about offering unconditional positive regard. I agree that this is very important. But it’s also essential to remember that you are building a professional relationship, not a friendship, and giving some thought to the business part of the situation is a good way of demonstrating this.

Hypnotherapy providing vital support for anxiety

Although not formally recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) clinical hypnotherapy continues to be a modality offered to its members by the national charity Anxiety UK.

Working with Occupational Stress

I haven’t checked them all (of course) but I’d say every decent Hypnotherapy Practitioner course covers working with stress. Whoever you train with, or wherever you are in the world, it’s a staple of many practices and often underlies or interacts with other presenting issues as well. Learning about stress is the Hypnotherapist's equivalent of learning their ABCs. Of course the basics are usually pretty much the same: for example, no matter what the cause of the stress the biology doesn’t change. But occupational (work related) stress has elements that may not arise in stress that comes from other sources. It's worth knowing about them, so here are a few basic guidelines.

Business Building for Hypnotherapists

Once the therapy training is over, and you’ve gained your diploma, it’s all too easy to set yourself up with a web site, an email address and a room for your practice, and wait for the clients to come in. And you might find that you wait….and wait….and wait… and wonder what’s wrong with you.

12 tips for compelling hypnotic suggestions

Whether you adapt other people's scripts, write your own, or extemporise your therapy sessions (= make them up as you go!) understanding how to craft the perfect suggestion for your client is an absolute necessity for every hypnotherapist.
In this article I'm going to look at what makes that perfect hypnotic suggestion to help your client make the changes they want to make.

What is Past Life Regression?

My introduction to Regression came in 2000 during a Reiki treatment when my client spontaneously went into a past life. She began to speak to me in a child’s voice, recalling her daily routine, her surroundings and the bus ride to school.  It came as a bit of a shock to me, as at the time I was ‘sat on the fence’ where past lives/life after death, were concerned.
